Stockholm archipelago

Stockholm's unique archipelago rose from the sea more than 800 million years ago, a collection of more than 30,000 islands, rocky islets and skerries whose final shapes were carved by the inland ice. It extends from Arholma in the north about 150 kilometers along the coast of Uppland and Södermanland to Landsort in the south and in a west-east direction from Stockholm about 80 km to the east up to the height of Svenska Högarna. The landscape changes from wild, windswept rock islands in the outer archipelago to densely wooded islands in the inner archipelago.
